Standard Paths
Rangers start off as ranged attackers and then split into two sub trees for melee and two for ranged, with one of each path being more specialized while the other is more general purpose.
Class: Strider to Blade Dancer
Best Characters: Maeve, Caius
Aspects: Ancara’s Glow, Pelagiel’s Flash, Shamac’s Tide, Manos’s Fury
Weapons: Power, Balance
The Strider to blade dancer path is the most effective melee dodge tank in the game & plays to the high speed growth of Maeve and Caius. Dodging will increase power and Maeve’s kills will increase her dodging too, which is a nice little circular feedback loop that gives her a little edge over Caius at pure dodging. Caius has slightly better strength so he’ll do more damage & his personal skill will give him better accuracy.
The weightless skill makes power weapons highly effective for doubling, but it doesn’t reduce the dodge penalty. Thus you might want to use balance weapons against high accuracy foes.
Ancara’s Glow is perfect for this path: it drops luck to improve power, dodge and true speed. Pelagiel’s Flash stacks nicely with the relentess damage bonus and Shamac’s Tide is helpful for sustain when you can dodge most, but not all attacks. Bladestorm (always hit when under 40% hp) also works extremely well with Manos’s Fury: the combination grants the +50% power bonus, but bladestorm’s always hit overrides Manos’s Fury’s 50% hit rate.
Class: Archer to Sniper
Best Characters: Rose, Garrick
Aspects: Quintare’s Quill, any damage aspect
Weapons: Power
Archer to sniper relies less on speed and more on single high damage attacks, so it’s a good match for Rose and Garrick who have high strength . Power weapons are highly usable here as their lack of accuracy is mitigated by accuracy skills from both classes. Rose has 50% more mastery growth than luck (combined with archer and sniper), so she could consider using Quintare’s Quill to swap mastery to luck & drastically improve her critical hit rate. Garrick can make good use of any damage boosting aspect. Unfortunately sniper’s attack from three sometimes still allows ranged retribution attacks. It seems to be mostly mage enemies that bug this way, but I haven’t figured out the exact pattern.
Class: Witch Hunter to Green Knight
Best Characters: Sophia
Aspects: Koeli’s Spirit, any 80% magic reduction aspect
Weapons: Power, Accuracy
Sophia’s huge fort growth works very well for the anti mage Witch Hunter to Green Knight route & this class’s defensive buffs can really elevate a tank’s survival. Koeli’s Spirit will swap her defense and fortitude to make her tank physical damage too. Pairing it with an 80% magic reduction aspect can make her even more defensive against mages when she doesn’t need to swap to physical defense.
Class: Drifter to Outlaw
Best Characters: Sophia, Garrick
Aspects: Malice’s Suffering
Weapons: Critical
Sophia’s high luck growth also works well with Drifter to Outlaw, though this combo won’t shine until after you get to Outlaw. Garrick works here too given his bonus to critical damage. Malice’s Suffering is very effective for pushing near 100% critical rate, but you will have to be very careful with positioning with the halved defenses it inflicts.
Other Builds
Class: Strider to Sniper
Best Characters: Maeve, Caius
Aspects: Pelagiel’s Flash
Weapons: Power
A faster sharpshooter using strider’s weightless to halve the weight of (quite heavy) power bows to get the most from their considerable damage. Strider’s speed coupled with Mave/Caius innate speed will enable double attacks on most enemies. Pelagiel’s Flash goes well with strider’s relentless to give a 56% bonus to second hits.
You won’t be able to rely on dodging as much as with a pure blade dancer build, but shooting from range will help mitigate that & Maeve’s personal skill will give her +30% dodge if she manages a kill.
Class: Drifter to Sniper
Best Characters: Sophia, Garrick, Rose
Aspects: Malice’s Suffering or Quintare’s Quill
Weapons: Critical, Accuracy
Drifter supplies critical chance and damage bonuses & the restriction of at most one adjacent unit works really well with Sniper’s ability to shoot from 3 range. Malice’s Suffering along side critical weapon upgrades completes the critical modifier trifecta and that aspect’s halved defenses are mitigated by shooting from range. Rose has low luck and high mastery, so she can shine with Quintare’s Quill if you plan to give Malice’s Suffering to someone else.
Class: Drifter to Blade Dancer
Best Characters: Sophia, Garrick
Aspects: Kitara’s Chord
Weapons: Critical, Accuracy
A melee reprise of the previous build, but it can also perfectly utilize Kitara’s Chord. This aspect swaps accuracy to dodge such that 1% enemy hit rate is often possible with accuracy weapon. Usually this means the character will have incredibly low accuracy and be unable to consistently land blows, however; this build merely needs to go below 40% hp and it will always hit due to bladestorm! You will need to equip a second aspect to take a hit or two and fall below 40% hp.
To make this even better, every dodge will add 2% power up to 30% thanks to dancer’s grace. This boost will mean that you can use critical and accuracy weapon without worrying about the lower damage. You won’t reach 100% critical chance, like with Malice’s Suffering, but that’s a small price to pay for a character with 99% dodge rate, 100% hit rate and damage that increases when they dodge. When the enemy has lower hit rate, critical weapon can give up to 75% crit rate & accuracy weapon will still have 45%.
Unfortunately this build is currently bugged for critical chance. If you hit naturally before bladestorm is applied you can still crit. However, the guaranteed hit from bladestorm can never be a crit. This massively lowers the critical chance of this build while using Kitara’s Chord.
Class: Archer to Blade Dancer
Best Characters: Caius, Garrick, Rose
Aspects: Kitara’s Chord
Weapons: Power
Given the critical hit issue with bladestorm + Kitara’s Chord, this build focuses on pure power instead. Archer has the highest strength gain as do Caius/Garrick/Rose and archer’s accuracy bonus (and Caius’s personal skill) will enable hitting 200 accuracy with power weapon & then swapping that to dodge with Kitara’s Chord.
While not as amazing as 1 crit killing enemies on enemy phase, this build should still do considerable damage with dancer’s grace scaling the high base damage of power weapon.
