Standard Paths
Classes: Arcanist to Wizard
Best Characters: Any
Aspects: Yl’andra’s Font
Weapons: Power
Arcanist to wizard is the magical nuke path, full of bonuses to power, accuracy and mastery. None of the mages can go wrong with this straight forward and quite powerful, but not particularly speedy or bulky path. Boosting power even more with an aspect like Yl’andra’s Font is a good choice for wizards.
Classes: Battlemage to Aegis
Best Characters: Liberty
Aspects: Jahno’s Stupor
Weapons: Power, Accuracy
Battlemage to aegis is the mage tank option & it performs that role well overall, leaning a little more into physical bulk with two skills that boost defense by 10% of magic. The 15% buff to power of adjacent allies is useful, but if you attack with the battlemage first, you may not have other units in range yet to benefit. Liberty jumps out as the mage to pick for this progression: her personal skill gives an additional +10% magic to defense and she has the best defensive growths by far.
Classes: Conjurer to Pyromancer
Best Characters: Monroe
Aspects: Vosh’s Sanguination, Kaithir’s Promise
Weapons: Accuracy
Conjurer to pyromancer is a self healing fire mage path that can be used to create a high sustain enemy phase character. You have to be careful though, because neither class has top tier defenses. Monroe is a natural fit for this class: he has huge hp to improve safety, which also is the basis for the scaling damage and crit skills of these classes. Because you will live or die based on life steal, it’s best to use accuracy weapon. You could use a pure accuracy aspect as well, but Monroe comes with Vosh’s Sanguination which will help accuracy, speed and other advanced stats. Kaithir’s Promise can be helpful if you want to give Vosh’s to someone else or might be preferred when the +8 cap on Vosh makes it a bit less useful end game.
Classes: Magician to Illusionist
Best Characters: Alden, Sara, Sloane
Aspects: Pelagiel’s Flash, Ancara’s Glow, Koeli’s Spirit (Sloane), Sarathel’s Sight (Sara)
Weapons: Balanced
Magician to Illusionist is the path of the speed over pure magical force. Notably Alden can double about anyone on this path and will be a decent dodge tank. This class is the best support mage as well: the utility of long range phasing is great for getting a heavy hitter out of a pinch or even tossing someone over walls to attack. Not to mention the accuracy and dodge bonuses can come in quite handy. Pelagiel’s Flash for extra damage and Ancara’s Glow for a balance of damage, speed and dodge are both quite useful.
Sloane’s high fortitude and speed on the magician path makes her an enemy phase mage tank. Give her Koeli’s Spirit and she can swap defense with fortitude to tank physical damage instead. Any 80% magic reduction aspect would pair nicely, so she can swap between the two as needed.
Sara can take on a more support role in this path. Her 10% damage bonus on hit will stack with Sarethel’s Sight’s additional 10% bonus to help other units finish off those high bulk targets.
Other Builds
Classes: Conjurer to Aegis
Best Characters: Liberty
Aspects: Jahno’s Stupor
Weapons: Accuracy or Balanced
This blends the two defensive mage trees in a way that gives you life steal at the cost of a little defense and fortitude lost from battlemage. Liberty with Jahno’s is very similar to her battlemage build, but the self healing makes her an even better enemy phase character. Accuracy is still critical for life steal based survival, so prefer that weapon. If you plan to have party accuracy buffs (magician) around her, you could go with balanced instead.
Classes: Conjurer to Wizard
Best Characters: Monroe
Aspects: Vosh’s Sanguination
Weapons: Accuracy
The goal of swapping pyromancer to wizard is to drop some random damage skills in exchange for wizard’s constant 20% bonus to power and mastery. This will reduce the variance for damage, and thus life steal, which should increase survival and allow a more consistent enemy phase. Accuracy weapon remains critical, as this build doesn’t pick up the arcanist’s bonus to accuracy. Wizard actually has higher fortitude than pyromancer, so this character will fare better against enemy magic users but does lose quite a bit defense in exchange.
Classes: Magician to Wizard
Best Characters: Alden, Sloane
Aspects: Yl’andra’s Font, Koeli’s Spirit
Weapons: Balance
Sacrifice some speed to pick up wizard’s superior damage skills and magical growth. Balance weapon helps ensure doubles are still possible and Yl’andra’s Font will help both of your attacks for more total damage than Pelagiel’s Flash & still helps in the cases you can’t double.
Sloane won’t double reliably, but her high fortitude growth combined with these two classes make a good magic tank and she can swap Koeli’s Spirit in to take on physical foes, which goes nicely with her 15% to hit bonus in melee range. She’ll have 10% lower fortitude growth compared to taking illusionist, but wizard certainly adds significantly more damage between 30% better magic growth and the 20% bonus to magic and mastery.
Classes: Battlemage to Illusionist
Best Characters: Sara
Aspects: Sarathel’s Sight
Weapons: Balance
Sara’s personal skill stacks with Sarathel’s Sight to set a 20% damage bonus on the foe she attacks & battlemage’s superconductor grants 15% power to adjacent allies when she attacks. If you can position such that Sara attacks first while adjacent to one or more party members & then those characters follow up, she can significantly boost their damage against her chosen target & still provide the 15% bonus for other targets. Illusionist will also provide a dodge bonus to make Sara a well balanced support mage in this setup.
Sara has more bulk than usual in this setup with battlemage’s defense growths, but she still is likely better served providing illusionist’s dodge bonus to nearby enemy phase characters or sharing enemy phase duties with someone than being the focal point.
